DEPUTY COMMANDER
Lieutenant Colonel Miguel SÁNCHEZ MACIZO
Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Sánchez Macizo was appointed Deputy Commander of the NATO Force Integration Unit Romania in July 2025. He is a Spanish infantry officer whose career spans more than two decades of command, staff, and multinational appointments across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. A native of Valladolid, he has led combat troops from platoon to battalion level, served in complex joint headquarters, and represented Spain in missions under the United Nations, the European Union, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Miguel Sánchez Macizo graduated from the General Military Academy of the Spanish Army and was promoted to First Lieutenant in 2001. He began his career in light infantry units, first commanding a platoon in the Tercio “Duque de Alba” No. 2 of the Spanish Legion and deploying to Iraq in 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Upon promotion to Captain in 2004, he joined the 54th Group “Regulares de Ceuta” Light Infantry Regiment. He deployed to Kosovo in 2005 with the Kosovo Force peacekeeping mission as Intelligence Officer and to Lebanon in 2007 with the United Nations Interim Force, serving as a Liaison Officer.
In 2008 he assumed the Company Commander position in the 9th “Soria” Light Infantry Regiment. He deployed three times to Afghanistan: as Quick Reaction Force Company Commander in 2009, as the Maneuver Company Commander in 2011, and as a J35 Staff Officer within the Regional Command West Headquarters in 2013.
Promoted to Major in 2014, he returned to the General Military Academy as 4th Course Infantry Branch Commander. After completing the Superior Logistics Course in 2017, he was assigned to the Army Logistic Command in Madrid and deployed to Mali with the European Union Training Mission, where he was the J3 Operations and Combined Mobile Advisory and Training Team Commander.
From 2018 to 2021 he served at SHAPE in Belgium, assigned to the Comprehensive Crisis and Operations Management Centre. In 2021 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Commander of the “Zamora” I/29 Light Infantry Battalion, which he led during the 2024 enhanced Forward Presence deployment to Slovakia.
In 2024, following his battalion command, he was assigned to the Logistics Directorate of the General Staff in Madrid, and later deployed to Lebanon as Head of Operations and Plans at the Mission Support Centre, UNIFIL Force Headquarters.
Lieutenant Colonel Sánchez Macizo has completed the NATO Tactical Operations in a Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Environment Course, the NATO Crisis Management Course, the Counter-Insurgency Course for Young Officers, the Peacekeeping Operations Course, and the Pedagogical Skills Course for Officers.
His decorations include the Plaque and the Cross of the Royal and Military Order of Saint Hermenegild, two Spanish Army Meritorious Service Crosses, the NATO Non-Article 5 Medal (KFOR in Kosovo), three NATO Non-Article 5 Medals (ISAF in Afghanistan), two United Nations Medals (UNIFIL in Lebanon), the Common Security and Defence Policy Service Medal (Mali), and the Cross of the Slovak Republic (Third Class).
He is married, has four children, and is professionally proficient in English and French, in addition to his native Spanish.
