SUMMARY

NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) is a multinational NATO Headquarters based in Bucharest, Romania. It was created in 2015 as a reply to the changes within the security environment and the threats coming from the East and South. The decision to create this HQs as well as other 5 such structures on the eastern flank of the Alliance was taken during the Wales Summit of September 2014 where the Readiness Action Plan was approved.

In July 2024, NATO established the Allied Reaction Force (ARF). This new force is part of NATO’s updated defense strategy and is designed to be more agile and robust across land, maritime, air, and cyber domains.

Key features of the ARF include:

  • High Readiness: The ARF is a strategic, high-readiness force capable of rapid deployment.

  • Swift Response: It can mobilize very fast to address threats and strengthen deterrence.

  • Flexibility: Additional forces can be allocated as needed by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).

  • Leadership and Training: The NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy leads the ARF now, which has undergone extensive training exercises to validate its readiness.

NFIU Romania has adapted to this new framework by enhancing its capabilities to facilitate the ARF’s rapid deployment, ensuring effective integration within NATO’s collective defense strategy.
